Earth Day underwater cleanup

Volunteers from Tacoma's dive community have joined hands to improve the environment during Earth Day. The cleanup will take places at Point Defiance Boathouse. 810 pounds of trash were removed from the waterways last year. This cleanup continues to help marine life and conserve the environment. You can promote your business by getting involved and meet others who enjoy scuba diving.

Organisers plan to bring together kayakers and scuba divers to take out fishing gear from the Tacoma waterfront. Divers will then lift the net from the water by using a boatlift. Wounded Warriors can help participants remove large quantities of trash and other debris. The cleanup is planned to preserve the water and provide an unforgettable experience for the community.

Rockfish survey

Scuba divers have the opportunity to help save endangered rockfish species through participation in a community-based survey at Tacoma SCUBA. This dive is part a citizen science collaboration between Harbor WildWatch and the NOAA. Divers of all levels are welcome to participate in the survey. There is no need for survey experience. The training is done during the dive brief. Participants must be certified to dive at night.

WDFW began a multi-year mark-recapture study near Westport, Washington, in 1998. The monitoring system of sport fishery tag-recovery monitoring involves five annual releases. These fish were released onto pinnacles in the Westport charter-fishing fleet area. This survey involves placing two wire tags coded within the opercular muscle of these fish in order to identify individual captures.

Easy exit with just pounds of trash

Commencement Bay is a good place to go diving in the greater Tacoma Area. This Earth Day, 47 pounds of trash was collected by volunteers from the water by scuba divers. Octopuses, fishing wire, and glass bottles were all part of the garbage. The clean-up was organized by the Marine Science and Technology Center (MaST), part of Highline Community College. A previous MaST cleanup removed hundreds of pounds of trash from the waters around Des Moines.

Observation of wounded bull sea lion

Tacoma dive group, Washington had the honor of seeing an amazing sight while they were scuba diving. A bull sea lion was shot by an arrow and stunned divers. The injured animal was reportedly blind and had a scar from a shark bite. Bjorn, who was blind from the shark bite, was taken to Los Angeles' Marine Mammal Care Center where rescuers assisted him in gaining weight. Bjorn was named for a character in "Vikings" TV series. The mighty sea lion, which weighs in at nearly 400 pounds, is now residing at Tacoma Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

This spectacular sight was witnessed by a Tacoma group of scuba divers in October. It was their first encounter with a sealion during a dive. They were so excited to be able to share the experience with other scuba divers. Observations also reveal the playful nature of sea lions. Sea lion pups are more likely to play in the water with divers of similar age and group together. The pups also like to play with the divers, jumping into the water to give them toys and interacting with bubble streams.
