What is an Aqua Lung?

What is an Aqua Lung? In its simplest form, it is a self-contained, open-circuit breathing apparatus. Aqua-Lungs was one of the first type of self-contained respiratory apparatus. It quickly gained commercial success and popularity around the world. This equipment is commonly known as a twin hose diving regulator or demand valve. Aqua-lungs were first used by Emile Gagnan and Jacques Cousteau. They quickly became a hit in the diving world.

Jacques Cousteau

The first self-contained, open-circuit underwater breathing apparatus was created in the 1940s by Jacques Cousteau. Cousteau's design was based upon a demand valve system, which supplied compressed air to divers while they were underwater breathing. The Aqua lung, also known as the Aqua-Lung, opened the doors to diving for anyone who wanted to learn more about the sport. Aqua-Lung by Cousteau became the standard for divers around the world.

Emile Gagnan

Emile Ggnanan and Jacques-Yves Cousteau invented the Aqualung in the 1940s. It was inspired from the earlier designs for diving helmets of the 19th century. It allows underwater divers to inhale through a mouthpiece that releases compressed gas activated from their breath. Gagnan refined the regulator valve that feeds compressed oxygen to the diver's mouthpiece. This is proportional to how much diver breathes. This device revolutionized diving and allowed divers to explore underwater depths for scientific research, military, and recreational purposes.

The first open-circuit demand regulator

Cousteau designed the Aqua lung in 1944. He also patented it in 1946. The Aqua-Lung has been a favorite scuba regulator for many years. Gagnan was Cousteau’s father and Emile Gagnan was his French chemist colleague. They all knew Cousteau's research and decided to collaborate and create the Aqua-Lung regulator.

The BC1

The BC1 Aqua Lung, an advanced back inflation BC, is for commercial, military, or public safety divers. The BC1 Aqua lung's rugged design provides exceptional comfort, fit, & stability. The user manual includes details about the weights that can be inserted into each pouch. Two weight capacities are available for the BC1, one one chest and one one back. Different weight pouches can be used to customize the BC1 for individual needs.

The Titan

Aqua Lung Titan, a portable and lightweight regulator, integrates many of the same features as previous generations. Its lightweight design makes it very comfortable to use. Additionally, the soft polyurethane shell provides a comfortable fit. The lightweight and sturdy design make it easy to handle during an extended dive. It is affordable because of its moderate price. The device comes with two stages, including a second stage that prevents unwanted freeflow.

The Mentor

Aqua lung Mentor was developed in partnership with the United States Navy. It is a regulator that replaces older double hoses that were used to train divers to rebreather. Although the Aqua lung isn't yet available for general sale, it is a great option for professional divers who want an alternative to the double-hose regulators. These are some important things to remember when purchasing the Aqua lung Mentor. First, ensure that the Aqua lung mentor is calibrated.
