What is an Aqua Lung, you ask?

What is an Aqualung? It is an open-circuit, self-contained breathing apparatus. Aqua-Lungs are a self-contained breathing device that was developed in the early days of modern technology. They quickly became very popular and have enjoyed commercial success all over the world. This equipment is commonly known as a twin hose diving regulator or demand valve. Aqua-lungs were invented by Emile Gagnan (Jacques Cousteau) and quickly became a popular part of the diving industry.

Jacques Cousteau

Jacques Cousteau created the first open-circuit, self-contained underwater breathing apparatus in the 1940s. Cousteau designed the first underwater breathing apparatus that used compressed air. The Aqua-Lung is the name of the device that opened the sport to everyone who had an interest. Cousteau's Aqua-Lung became the standard for divers everywhere.

Emile Gagnan

Emile Gagnan (Jacques-Yves Cousteau) and Emile Gagnan (Emil Gagnen) invented the Aqua lung in the 1940s. Its innovative design was derived from the earlier designs of diving helmets in the 19th century. It allows underwater divers the ability to breathe through a mouthpiece, which releases compressed oxygen activated by diver's breath. Gagnan refined the regulator valve that feeds compressed oxygen to the diver's mouthpiece. This is proportional to how much diver breathes. This device was a breakthrough in the diving industry, allowing people to explore ocean depths for scientific observation, military use, and recreational purposes.

Cousteau designed the Aqua lung in 1944. He also patented it in 1946. The Aqua-Lung has been a popular scuba regulator ever since. Gagnan, Cousteau’s father-in law, and Emile Gagnan his French colleague were also part the team. They all knew Cousteau and decided to collaborate on the Aqua-Lung regulator.
