The Benefits of Becoming a Dive Master

A dive master is an instructor who leads organized or recreational dives. In many countries, the dive master qualification is the required level for divers with supervisory or guide responsibility. A job as a divemaster isn't for everyone. But, it is possible to become a master dive instructor if your qualifications are right. Here are some benefits to becoming a divemaster.

What is the job description for a dive master? In short, it involves a variety of duties, including assessing the risks of diving, supervising customer dives, delivering briefings and leading groups through a dive. A dive master's job description can be even more varied. Divers can be responsible in many different areas of the dive shop, such as general operation and social presence.

Diving instructors instruct and supervise scuba techniques, whether in open water or in swimming pools. They also supervise activities that are not related to training, such as navigation exercises. Open water instructors will lead students on the tour portion of the dives. These include the navigation exercise, and the surface swim portion. An instructor in diving may also oversee the certification of divers. There are different laws that apply to dive instructors. The waiver signed by the dive instructor may exempt the diving instructor from legal responsibility in certain countries.

Certification requirements

You will need to complete a course if you want to become a divemaster. A Divemaster course covers topics such as setting up a dive site, managing a group of divers, conducting diver flows, and finding the flow for dives. A minimum of 60 dives must be logged in order to qualify. Divemasters can also help new divers with their theory and skills by assisting the instructors on dive courses.


Dive masters have to take courses in addition. They also need to pass a two-part exam. The candidates must score at the least 75% on each portion of the exam in order to pass. The PADI Instructor Guide and the eRDPML will be used to prepare for the exam. Students also need to prepare an emergency assistance plan and complete five waterskills exercises. The sum of all scores must equal at least 15 After completion of the course, divers must obtain certification.

Internship requirements

You have many internship options for becoming a Divemaster. You can either assist with PADI Courses or help to set up dive spots, depending on your preference. It is possible that you will be asked to assist in skill circuits. But, your internship will have a pattern. A typical internship will last for eight weeks. During this period, you may be able to become an Advanced Open Water Diver. After four to six weeks of training, you will be able to become a Divemaster or Diveguide.

You may also be able to find a free internship for Divemasters in addition to paid internships. Although internships are not always the best, it will give you plenty of time to learn and receive advice from Divemasters. You may also be eligible to receive manuals, certification, or equipment as part your internship. You should also be aware of the requirements before enrolling in any Divemaster course.
